CUTS to Airnorth's Gold Coast to Darwin, via Mount Isa, service will come into effect as early as May 2.

In a media statement, the airline thanked its Darwin, Mount Isa and Gold Coast passengers for their support and said it looked forward to continue providing them with a full service, weekly return operation every Thursday.

"This service commenced operation in 2009 in response to tourism and corporate demand which has since declined, no longer making it viable to operate a twice weekly service."

In January The North West Star reported Mount Isa residents were paying up to $250 more for the same service compared to customers at the Gold Coast and Darwin, but the airline wouldn't say whether the decline in passenger numbers stemmed from Mount Isa.

The airline's spokesperson said customers who booked flights after May 2 on a Wednesday service would be re-accommodated on the continuing Thursday service.

"Airnorth will do everythi
ng possible to support impacted customers to ensure minimal disruption to their travel arrangements."
